Project Overview
One Acre Integrated Farm Income Climate Smart Project (OAIFICSP)
One Acre Integrated Farm Income Climate Smart Project (OAIFICSP) is a strategic intervention designed to Promote a one acre climate smart integrated intensive farming system (IIFS) approach that enhances household income & nutritional security. It seeks to build farmer capacity to;
- Practice agroforestry as a response action towards climate change and environment sustainability.
- Practice Integrated Intensive Farming System (IIFS) of select strategic enterprise combinations for rural livelihoods transformation.
- Develop a self-sustaining community-led input and output marketing system.
- Improve HH nutrition & wellbeing through increased access & consumption of animal proteins.
The project select enterprise mix in one acre piece of land includes;
- Homestead, Poultry unit, Fuel wood trees & Food security crops (cassava, maize & bananas) - 0.5 acres
- Commercial Tree (Eucalyptus, Pine) & Beehives - 0.25 acres
- Fruit Tree (avocados/mangoes/oranges) & Beehives - 0.25 acres
- Zero grazing/Apiculture (only 1 option can be integrated)
- Farm fenced with Calliandria species, good for honey bees, fodder for animals and as fuel wood.
Project Rational
The impact of weather shocks resulting from climate change combined with the diminishing landholding is greatly affecting the livelihoods of rural poor HHs in Uganda and most pronounced in the east and northern part of the country. The cyclical dry spells have led to crop failures causing food insecurity & affecting rural livelihoods. The heavy land fragmentation that has limited extensive farming system, now demands farmers to adopt Intensive Integrated Farming System (IIFS) approach.
One Acre Integrated Farm Income Climate Smart Project (OAIFICSP) is a strategic response approach that seeks to transform rural livelihoods while preserving environment. The project design & plan of implementation are within the context of the Uganda National Climate Change policy, particularly the
three areas of;
- Promoting climate change adaptation strategies that enhance resilient, productive, and sustainable agricultural systems.
- Promoting and supporting climate change education, awareness raising and capacity development from local to national level.
- Encourage agro-forestry to enable rural households to meet their energy needs while preserving the environment.

Stakeholder engagement

Project Implementation
The implementation of this project commenced in 2022 in Kumi district in Teso sub region, and majoring on the poultry enterprise. Currently, the project is working directly with over 5,000 farmers in five districts; Soroti, Serere, Ngora, Kumi and Pallisa.
Its implementation adopts a Market Systems Development (MSD) approach is anchored towards facilitating business growth and sustainability by building market systems that work for the poor. Partnerships have been crucial to the success of this project. YAIC is collaborating with both private and public development actors with different partners prioritizing on a particular enterprise value chain in the enterprise mix.
The project is expected to achieve the following outcome indicators;
- A transformed rural economy with HHs earning annual income of UGX20M sustainably.
- Households are sustainably self-reliant on biomass energy while conserving the environment
- A balanced ecosystem restored & farmers living in a serene environment
